Meet Mr. Tomato (Part One)
Steve Bogash is the Regional Horticulture Educator for Penn State Extension, but many people simply know him as Mr. Tomato. It wasn’t very long ago that Steve hadn’t even tasted a fresh tomato. That changed when he met his future wife, Roberta, and it changed in a very big way.
Today, he is devoted to helping farmers and home gardeners grow the best tomatoes and other vegetables they can. On this week’s show, we talk about some of the fruits that have always gotten high marks in blind taste tests Steve conducts. He also talks about varieties that are the best garden plants, and the care and feeding of tomato plants.
Some of Steve’s favorites, clockwise from top left: Monticello ‘Mortgage Lifter’, Park’s ‘Big Beef’, Burpee ‘Bush Early Girl’, Park’s ‘Pineapple’ , Burpee ‘Brandy Boy’, Johnny’s ‘Solid Gold’.
