Chlorophyll in His Veins
Over the years, we’ve presented young gardeners who are still excited about our passion, and optimistic about the future of gardening.
One of those people is plant breeder, writer, and speaker Joseph Tychonievich, whose journey into the world of plants started when his mother asked him what he wanted for his 5th birthday. His answer was "Plants and seeds!"
Not much has changed since then. Joseph has worked at the display gardens at Ohio State, and in Japan for the famed nurseryman Akira Shibamichi. He is currently a PhD student at Michigan State University.
His popular blog is Greensparrow Gardens, which includes information on everything from rare plants to scientific explanations (with a recipe or two).
We talked about some of the 
plants he is working on – inventing hybrids and discovering plants that might have potential for American gardens. That includes a petunia species, P. exserta (above, left) that he has introduced through Annie’s Annuals in Northern California. He recommends some out-of-the-ordinary chrysanthemums from Fairbault Growers, and talks about some wild and crazy kale. Don’t miss Joseph’s findings on Cilantro fruits, too (above, right).
