Meet the Pres.
This week’s guest is Drew Becher, the new President of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). We talk a bit about the Philadelphia International Flower Show (detail, below, left), the world’s largest indoor show, which runs from March 6 to March 13th at the Philadelphia Convention Center.
Drew was formerly the Executive Director of the New York Restoration Project, which was founded by entertainer and environmentalist Bette Midler in 1995. Prior to that, he worked on greening Chicago, which has become the garden city of the US – where parks and plantings attract thousands of tourists each summer from around the world.
PHS, the nation’s first horticultural society, founded in 1827, motivates and inspires people to improve the quality of life and transform their neighborhoods through horticulture (below). This year, PHS programs funded in part by Flower show proceeds, will promote community gardens all over the City, and provide thousands of underserved city residents with more than 20,000 pounds of fresh produce through the City Harvest program. PHS will also launch a one million trees initiative, TreeVitalize 2020, to expand the tree canopy across the region – New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania.
