The Present is the Future, and Vice Versa
Maria Rodale describes herself as an M.O.M. (which stands for Mean Old Mom) to three girls. She is a writer, cook, organic enthusiast, romance novel lover, and country music fan who does yoga. But in her day job, she is the Chairman and CEO of Rodale, Inc., the largest independent publisher left in America.
Rodale publishes some of the best-known health and wellness lifestyle magazines, including Men’s Health, Prevention, Runner’s World, and of course, Organic Gardening. And books like An Inconvenient Truth, by Al Gore; The South Beach Diet; and her recent book — Organic Manifesto. In this book, she lays down some inconvenient truths, as well.
Maria is the granddaughter of J.I. Rodale, who founded the company in 1930. He realized the direct relationship between the declining health of America’s soil and the health of America’s people – a revolutionary view in those days. She carries on the family tradition, and reveals some dire facts. We’ve come to distrust government, and the subsidies to mega-food producers that artificially keep prices of chemically grown food low, confirm our suspicions. Maria bluntly called these strategies poisonous. Growing food organically has come a long way, but has a very long way to go. What to do?
Maria offered some advice on the show. And what about the state of publishing? She shared her thoughts and plans on this topic, as well. Rodale recently launched a new website as a clearing-house for information on health and fitness (rodale.com), and has done a major makeover to the Organic Gardening site.
