Not all gardeners know that some of the best looking plants we see at our local garden centers come from nurseries in Oregon. Crystal Cady has been working in that state’s horticultural industry for half her life. That is especially impressive when you learn that her career spans 15 years. At just 31, Crystal has worked for several garden centers as a grower, designer, retailer and all while studying horticulture, botany and business. She has also volunteered for industry associations. She participates as the Seminars Coordinator for the Farwest Trade Show mounted by the Oregon Association of Nurseries and is also the Chair of the Yard, Garden and Patio Show.
Through it all, Crystal has been growing containers and hanging baskets for private clients and to sell at local farmers’ markets. She and her husband, Josh (above), are closing in on their dream. They hope to have their own garden center by spring. This place will be a nursery with a café, display gardens, community plantings, offer fresh fruits and vegetables and even be home to a vineyard. The official website, Sunflower Acres Farm, will be up by November, 2013.
Meet Crystal this week on the show, and learn about one of the most indefatigable young professionals in the US. Of course, you can also find her on various social media sites such as FaceBook and Pinterest.
