A Rebroadcast: The Take-away on Compost? Just Do It!
This week’s guest, Deb Martin, “discovered” composting when she was a garden book editor at Rodale Press. Her first project was to oversee the updating of the Rodale Book of Composting. She now says, “Compost turned my view of gardening upside down, and today I can’t imagine doing one without the other.”
Her latest book written with Barbara Pleasant, The Complete Compost Gardening Guide, (Barbara,left, and Deb, right) is filled with information, techniques, recipes, and easy to build projects designed to make composting successful with less work. Deb gives me some advice on composting in winter. (The results of the effort are shown in a recycled bag, below.)
One of her recommendations is something I will take under advisement: Locate the compost in a convenient place. My open rows of piles in various stages of decomposition are across the footbridge over the river to the “mainland” off my island property. 
Subsequently, I don’t go there often enough. I am going to start a few new piles closer to the woodland garden in a more convenient spot. I’ll use the leaves I’ve collected this fall – not only to start the compost – but also in their leaf bags arranged to contain the piles and insulate them for winter.
