On this week’s show, I ask Robert Kourik, a pioneer in the practice of drip irrigation, about the best ways to use water in gardens – especially vegetable gardens. 
We are all interested in not wasting water – regardless of our climates. For example – overhead watering allows a good deal of the moisture to evaporate (as well as promoting diseases). A much more efficient use of water (30% – 70%) is to deliver it directly where it is needed. And that means a network of water lines, tubes and emitters.
“Most people think of drip irrigation as primarily useful in times of drought and for saving money on the water bill,” said Kourik. His research demonstrates the undeniable fact that drip-irrigated plants grow and produce more prolifically while actually using less water. 
The same is found for ornamental plants in landscapes and gardens.
