A Rebroadcast: Welcome Pollinators
Some ninety-seven percent of all animals on the planet are invertebrates: animals without a backbone. Many of these creatures are insects and among those are bees, butterflies, moths and other important pollinators. (Melisoides bee on cosmos, below: photo by Mace Vaughn.)
Matthew Shepherd is Senior Conservation Associate, and has been with the Society since 1999. He is one of the authors of the Xerces Society Guide to Attracting Native Pollinators: Protecting North America’s Bees and Butterflies. The goal of the publication is to ensure pollination in gardens, 
orchards and farms; identifying the flower-visiting insects in your region; providing host plants and nesting sites for bees and butterflies; creating a landscape that is beautiful, diverse and pollinator friendly. The 372-page book is filled with photographs of helpful invertebrates, gardens and landscapes, suggestions for native plants.
The Xerces Society is a nonprofit organization that protectswildlife through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitat.
