Learn More, From the Bottom Up
Our guest is Canadian lawn expert Richard Tighe who has been dealing with grass – or turf as the pros call it — for over twenty years. His company, A Growing Necessity, developed the Grass Roots Process ten years ago to offer clients personalized nutritional management. His vision statement is: 'Restoring soil health to maximize plant growth'. The process includes soil testing in the US or Canada and educational courses on DVDs.
“We do not sell anything [lawn care products] but the access to soil science and soil science knowledge,” he says. “However, we make it simple for homeowners (whether lawn or garden) to send their soil in (our kit) and quickly receive a 'prescription' of products that are in the market-place that can help them.
Richard believes that most problems with soil can be mitigated by adjusting elements: the NPK on fertilizer packages, whether organic or not. “Most lawns,” he says, “are over caffeinated with too much Nitrogen.” The solution is usually the other elements (Phosphorous, Potassium along with micro nutrients), which will bring the soil back into balance. Except in the most difficult cases, for example too much clay, nutrients alone will produce healthier, weed- and disease-resistant turf.
