Creepy Crawlers
Bugs infect our computers; they are secret listening devices; and they the subject of Amy Stewart’s latest book. Amy is the author of five books on the perils and pleasures of the natural world. With her best-selling books, including Flower Confidential and Wicked Plants, she has become one of the most sought after garden speakers, today. Amy is one of the founders of gardenrant.com, and the great garden speakers bureau, where people can find lecturers like Amy, recent guest Michele Owens, and me.
Amy’s latest book is Wicked Bugs, a follow up to the hit Wicked Plants (which is the subject of an exhibition at the San Francisco Botanical Garden running through April to October 30, 2011). Of course, as a gardener, Amy knows that not all “bugs” are wicked.
“Generally speaking, a bug that eats plants in the garden is not really wicked enough for me – after all, most bugs eat plants,” she said. “That's how they survive.”But the book’s “Horrible, Painful, Dangerous, Destructive, Deadly” insects, slugs, true bugs and others have sensational stories to tell. And the worst bug? “The mosquito. The diseases carried by mosquitoes have killed more people than all wars combined.”
