For the Birds (and
Dragonflies)
This week’s guest is Jim
McCormac, a naturalist who works for the Ohio Division of Wildlife, and
specializes in non-game wildlife diversity issues, especially birds. Among
publications he has authored is Wild Ohio: The Best of Our Natural Heritage (Kent State University Press 2009), which won the
2010 Ohioana Book award. Jim and I talk about people
and wildlife, reducing lawn and the importance of growing local plants that
co-evolved with the insects that make up such an important part of the food
chain. Jim explains the essential place native plants have in the ecosystem. I also ask about a growing
interest of mine – insects in the order Odonata including dragonflies (above)
and damselflies. In just a few minutes, I learned so much from Jim, and want to
learn more from his blog. But Jim’s primary interest since childhood has been birds. His Ohio list
of sightings so far is nearing 350 different species.
