My
Designer Friend – the Salt of The Earth!
Bill
Mills visits the show again this week. He is the landscape designer for the
nursery and garden center TerraSalis in Malden, WV – just outside of
Charleston. Bill tells us about some of the jobs he is working on, for
examples, three home sites around the New River Gorge National Park – “the
Grand Canyon of the East.” He is using an all-native
plant palette, from this
part of the country, which like most of the Southeast, is rich in wild flora.
At this time of year, he’s noticing herbaceous plants like cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), hayscented fern (Dennstaedtia
punctiloba),
and grasses like Panicum
virgatum.
He’s also noticed sprouting
seedlings of woody plants like Carolina silver bell (Halesia tetraptera; ABOVE), fringe tree (Chimonanthes
virginicus),
and redbud (Cercis canadensis).
TerraSalis is Latin for “Salt of the Earth,”
and the
nursery is located on the grounds where The Dickinson Salt Works produced salt
for one hundred and twenty years. The nursery is brimming with annuals and
perennials, seeds, pottery, avian products, tools, as well as outdoor
furniture, garden ornaments and statuary. Bill
talks a bit about some of the things that are attracting shoppers and clients,
for example, some new recycled teak furniture (RIGHT).
