Less is More for this Photographer
My guest this week, professional photographer Saxon Holt , has been
gardening most of his life, and photographing gardens since the mid-1980s.
That’s when he realized he could merge his profession with his passion. Living
in Northern California – a gardener’s paradise — it’s easy to imagine leaving
the commercial studio for the great outdoors. Recently however, Saxon’s work
has focused on sustainable landscapes that are easy on the earth. In
California, that starts with conscientious water use.
Sustainable is the modern buzzword. But many gardeners have been
water-wise for decades, either because they wanted to reduce maintenance, cared
about the environment, or just loved plants that grew well with less water. The
current movement in California is towards reducing or eliminating grass lawn.
Saxon Holt’s most recent publication, The American Meadow Garden written by John
Greenlee, presents advice for an alternative to lawn and includes glorious
photos of examples. (Discover more at www.saxonholt.com.)
Saxon also shares his thoughts about what book and magazine publishing
may become in the future.
The interview was recorded from a xeriscape
convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
