Ethne Clarke Remakes Organic
Gardening for the 21st Century
This week’s guest on Ken
Druse REAL DIRT is Ethne Clarke, the
Editor-in-Chief of Organic Gardening (OG) magazine. The bi-monthly publication has a new, larger
format, heavier paper stock, a sophisticated design, and the addition of
content focused on cooking as a complement to growing food. Ethne (left) is a
professionally trained horticulturist and internationally known garden
historian and author. She has published 15 books on gardening and landscape
history. She spent 30 years in England, but is originally from Chicago;
so don't expect to hear an accent.OG’s major makeover can be seen in the February/March issue
(right), on newsstands now.
Organic Gardening's re-launch is in response to a changing mindset among
Americans who are choosing to lead healthier, more environmentally conscious
lives. Increasingly consumers are going back to basics, growing their own food,
cooking and preserving what they grow, and seeking out locally grown, organic food. These people are also seeking
up-to-date information from a magazine that began 67 years ago when folks were
planting Victory Gardens.
You can listen to Ethne and me right here, right now. If you’d like to
say hello, come to the New Jersey Flower & Garden Show on February 20th
and 21st at the NJ Convention Center in Edison, NJ where I will be
lecturing on propagation and hosting a container planting contest. You can also
say hello by writing in the comment space, below.

It’s good to hear that Organic Gardening is finally leaning in the direction of food again. I missed it, maybe I’ll thumb through an issue and see if it tempts me to take it home.
