Encore — Marco Stufano on
Winter Interest
If you missed the show that premiered on Christmas Day, you
can catch it here. My guest was Marco Polo Stufano, former director of
horticulture at Wave Hill, the public garden in The Bronx, NY. He talked about
things that are looking pretty good in his garden in winter, including Aucuba
japonica – a much maligned and under-used
shade tolerant evergreen. Many varieties of Aucuba are variegated, including ‘Sulphur’ (right), with
yellow leaves and dark green centers. Familiarity breeds contempt, it seems,
since these shrubs are often overlooked as choices for Zones 7 to 9 – Zone 6
with protection from winter sun and wind. ‘Sulphur’ is female, so if planted
with a male variety, you’ll get large red berries for winter, as well.
