The Garden Has Gone to the
Dogs, Thank Goodness!
Not all gardeners love pets. Just 99.99999% of us. I think a dog in a garden is a blessing, and a cat in a
country house is a necessity. I have had the good fortune over the years to
have shared lives with members of both the canine and feline worlds. The pets
who graced the garden in the past are remembered fondly in a photo album, like
Peach the cat who patiently posed in a concrete urn for a photo op (above).
Today, best friends Pippa the dog and Boy the cat grace the garden.
Is it weird to share your life with
another species? That’s something to ponder on another day. For now, I will
just enjoy the animals in the garden.
There are several books on what I
think of as essential relationships. Track down author Page Dickey’s Dogs in
Their gardens and Cats in Their
Gardens. We can add a new
self-published photo-logue by Eric Rochow — host of the enormously popular
video blog www.GardenFork.TV. Eric is
caregiver to two yellow Labrador retrievers that star in his book: The
Gardenfork Labradors. Eric joins me
on the show this week to talk about the dogs, the book, his TV show and more.
And I just have to throw in a photo taken
a few weeks ago, below, of Pippa dashing through the snow (and smiling).
