A TRIP NORTH (of Manhattan) – FOR VEGETABLES
My guest this week is Kristin M. Schleiter, Curator of Outdoor Gardens and Herbaceous Collections at the New York Botanical Garden, The Bronx, NY. Kristin learned about horticulture at Oliver Nurseries in CT. She was formerly the Garden Editor for the Martha Stewart Living TV show. Before horticulture, she worked in advertising and high tech marketing and has a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University.
We talk about the summer displays, especially The Edible Garden — a summer-long celebration of growing great food, including: Culinary Herb Garden, The Home Gardening Center, Good Food Garden, The Martha Stewart Herb Garden(left), Seed Savers Heirloom Vegetable Garden, Beginner’s Vegetable Garden, Vegetables and Kids, From Farm to Table. We also discussed the exhibition in the Conservatory: Tropical Fruits, Roots, and Shoots. There, plants can be seen bearing many of the tropical foods we know like chocolate and even tomatoes.
In the second half of the show, we get to talk about the herbaceous collections that Kristin oversees, including the incredibly lush perennial plantings behind the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, which is a living catalog of flowers for your garden, and the Seasonal Walk. This year, the Walk, which had traditionally been devoted to tender perennials, has beds planned by Peit Oudolf, the hottest garden designer around. The garden includes spring flowering bulbs and hardy and tender perennials.
While visiting the garden, take in the shop and find wonderful plant-inspired gifts, plants, containers, books and all sorts of things from around the world with botanical motifs. There is also a terrific selection of educational toys.
