This show was originally broadcast on Saturday, March 22, 2008:
This week, Ken and Vicki talk with Korey Lee, an inspiring gardener who helped organize the Branchville Do-Its, a group of citizens dedicated to making their hometown a more beautiful place to live. Korey is also one of the designers of the blue ribbon window box at Springfest Flower and Garden Show. She left us feeling encouraged and energized…and this quote from George Bernard Shaw:
"I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can."
While Korey is quick to credit her fellow Do-Its and other members of the community for their work around town, Branchville citizens named Korey "Citizen of the Year" for "doing whatever she can" to make it a good place to live.
Korey and the Branchville Do-Its are part of a world-wide network of "Guerrilla Gardeners" a term coined by a group of dedicated NYC gardeners in the 1970’s. We talk briefly about the Liz Christy Community Garden in NYC, where the rules of conduct for visiting the garden begin with this admonition: "Sun bathe, read, bird watch, stroll, relax, listen, smell and otherwise enjoy the garden."
